Description: Cambridge in Colour is dedicated to the photographic work of Sean McHugh. The site is a collection of his images taken in and around the University of Cambridge. A good number of his pictures demonstrate the effectiveness of shooting long exposures in low-light situations.
Tips: A visit to this site must begin by looking through the gallery. Many of the photography fundamentals used to create the images on the site are documented in the techniques section . More in-depth explanations, including a lot of valuable Photoshop information, is presented in the tutorials section.

Description: Digital Photography Review has established itself as one of the most popular sites to research digital cameras before buying. The site contains in-depth reviews and allows visitors to compare cameras side-by-side.  
Tips: The "Learn" section of the website (http://www.dpreview.com/learn/) provides information on a number of interesting photographic techniques.  The glossary will come in particularly handy for anyone new to digital photography terminology.  If you own a particular camera, the site's forums can become a very valuable resource.

Description: Digital Photography School is a regularly published blog that offers up ideas and tips to expand the visitor's knowledge of digital photography.  The site also posts a number of themed "assignments" which are meant to challenge readers to continue their development as a photographer by tackling new shooting challenges.  
Tips: You can't go wrong if you take the time to review all the site's previous postings. Thankfully, the author has categorized many of his postings if you're short on time. Particularly nice on this site are case studies which detail the logistics of getting certain types of shots. Also, the travel photography tagged postings provide insights on how photography can be used to provide a new perspective to your travels.  


Tips From The Top Floor

Description: Tips From The Top Floor (TFTTF) is a site that contains regular podcasts on the topic of digital photography. The content of the podcasts focus on better understanding your camera.
Tips: iTunes users should definitely subscribe to the podcast. Anyone new to digital photography will appreciate the laundry list of photography tips on the "101 Ways" page.  I also recommend delving into the "Information Library", which is a reader contributed wiki.


Jodie Colston's Free Online Photography Course

Tips: The Photography Course is a subsection of the morgueFile website. The website contains free images that can be downloaded by any visitor and used for creative projects.


JPG Magazine

Description: JPG Magazine is forum for amateur photographers to have their best work published. What makes this site unique is that the top pictures are not just shared online. A print version of the magazine is published six times a year.
Tips: All of the magazines back issues are available for download from the "Issues" section as a PDF. After viewing past issues, you can vote on the pictures submitted for future inclusion in the magazine.


The Luminous Landscape

Description: The Luminous Landscape is devoted to the art of landscape and nature photography.  The site contains a number of great tutorials and plenty of sample images.  
Tips: Be sure to browse through the "Understanding Series" for primers on advanced photographic concepts.  I also recommend perusing through the "Essays" section for some provocative quick reads from the site's author.

Description: megapixel.net is a little bit more than a hodge-podge of photographic information (just a little).  While there isn't a well conveyed theme or purpose to the site, you can spend a lot of time looking through the galleries of visitor submissions for, as the site proclaims, "inspiration".  
Tips: If you can forgive this site's poor navigation, there are some hidden gems. Browsing through the galleries is akin to a trip to the museum. The "Articles" section includes a lot of tips on camera equipment and photography techniques sure to expand you knowledge.   


Photojojo!

Description: Besides having one of the most entertaining to pronounce website names, Photojojo gives readers some very creative ideas that take photography outside conventional thinking.
Tips: The postings to this blog are not as frequent as I'd like, but it is more than made up for by the unique nature of the articles. You can subscribe to the site's newsletter on the home page to have the information pushed to you. If you have a bunch of pictures sitting on your hard drive, take a look at the "do it yourself" tagged postings to find novel ways to display your work.  


Strobist

Description: The Strobist blog is dedicated to democratize the world of professional lighting equipment. Okay, perhaps that's an exaggeration, but the author demonstrates the effectiveness of using small, off-camera strobes (flash units) to create pleasing lighting effects.
Tips: Begin by reading the introductory post which explains the concept of a "strobist". Once you get the idea, follow the "Lighting 101" series of postings to get a good foundation on becoming a strobist. This site drives home the fact photography really is "painting with light".
